Arty Type Book Covers

Capturing the essence of three Tate Modern artists
During my time at Central Saint Martins, one of our briefs involved a trip to the Tate Modern. We were invited to create three book covers for publications about three artists of our choice. The covers were for a series called ‘Arty Type’ and, as such, had to be typographically driven. I decided to take an experimental approach that involved creating the type out of physical materials inspired by the artists.
Bram Bogart
An artist who creates huge white sculptural paintings, Bram Bogart encourages his audience to see paint itself as the art. Trying to capture the tactility and texture of his work, I experimented with spray foam and polyfilla on canvas to create this cover.
Christo
Christo are a duo famed for their installations that wrap entire buildings and canyons in orange and white fabric. As it moves in the wind, their fabric allows us to see something usually invisible: the wind. I used needles to create letters out of balloon rubber (an object that is shaped by breath) by pinning it onto a foam backing.
Ceal Floyer
Ceal Floyer is an artist known for inviting the audience to reimagine the mundane. I was inspired by ‘Monochrome Till Receipt’, and the way that litter can subvert expectations and invite curiosity. I created the letters for the artist’s name out of receipts, and wanted them to feel scattered across the cover, as if a bin bag had split and spilt them across the table. Yet, within the mess, letters can be discovered if the audience chooses to pause and look closer.
